Guo Mingai
Guo Mingai is a cellist performer which always leaves an impactful sound on the listeners. She began her journey of a musician at the age of 6, where she took on piano first for 3 years, before learning the cello at the age of 9. She studied under the guidance of Xu Zhong, principal cellist of Singapore Chinese Orchestra. She then auditioned into the Middle School Affiliated to China Conservatory of Music at the age of 11 years old and studied under Professor Zhao JiaNan. In year 2013, she attended the 2nd Hong Kong International String Competition and won 3rd place in the junior category. She then returned to Singapore at the age of 14 to take her Cambridge O levels examinations under Pasir Ris Secondary School where she also participated in the co-curricular activity Chinese Orchestra. During her days back in Singapore she received guidance from two figures, Ng Pei Sian, Principal Cellist of Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Leslie Tan, Founding member of Red Dot Baroque. She also auditioned into the Singapore Youth Symphony Orchestra during her secondary school days. She went to polytechnic after her O levels and took a major in 3D Interactive Media Technology while continuing her music studies on the side. Mingai performs extensively locally in orchestras, chamber and solo recitals.
Testimony to her proficiency in the cello, Mingai has performed with the Middle School Affiliated to China Conservatory of Music and Singapore Youth Symphony Orchestra, as a member of the orchestra. She also performed alongside the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Of Music (YST) orchestra in various performance at esplanade and Victoria concert hall. She is also an active chamber member, which has performed many different pieces such as Dvorak string quartet 12 “American”, Bassoon mixed quartet in G minor and more, and have performed in the Asian Civilisations Museum.
While striving to be a top-notch performer of her craft, Mingai is also a passionate teacher of her craft. She is a certified instructor with the Ministry Of Education (MOE), under the Arts and Music Instructor Scheme (AMIS). She has been invited to teach in primary school’s co-curricular activities (CCA) and leading the school towards competing in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF). Furthermore, she got her first student at the age of 15 and since then she accumulated experience from teaching students of various ages from school-aged kids to young millennials.
Mingai’s passion for music lead her to pursue the subject academically. She graduated with a diploma in 3D Interactive Media Technology which helped her to gain the knowledge of digital techniques such as editing her own videos and creating animations for her own music. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music (Honors) in cello performance in National University Of Singapore Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music under the guidance of professor Qin Li Wei and teaching assistant Wang Zihao.
